This meant that the stories and premises of his games slowly went more melodramatic and edgy as time went on, until it reached the point that folks were like "this is too silly". He's supposed to be cool, have attitude, have a bit of an edge. Lastly, Sonic's general tone has always been tricky compared to Mario and the like. Doubly so if you still had to beat it to unlock the true ending. This meant giving everyone more unique gameplay styles and loops, which gave the game variety and longevity but could be annoying to people who were just here for the classic speed platforming- all the moreso if even one of those playstyles just kinda sucked. Two, Sonic's expanding cast was expected to be there (and could compensate for a lack of Sonic levels), but it'd feel like a lot less bang for the buck if they played identically to Sonic, especially in the games where levels were shared among everyone. The issue is compound: One, because Sonic moves so fast he covers a lot more ground in a single level than most platformers- which in the 3D age means more assets to create, ballooning dev time from the old days. Spoilers for somethingįrankly the actual Sonic levels of SA1 (and SA2 to a lesser extent) are top notch.
